Try remaining with the feeling of hate, with the feeling of envy, jealousy, with the venom of ambition; for after all, that's what you have in daily life, though you may want to live with love, or with the word `love'.

미워하는 느낌, 시기 질투하는 느낌, 야망의 독즙, 그런 것들과 함께 그대로 머물러 있어 보세요. 무엇보다도 그게 여러분들의 일상 생활이기 때문에 그럽니다. 비록 사랑으로, 또는 '사랑'이라는 말과 함께 살려고 하기는 하지만 말입니다.

Since you have the feeling of hate, of wanting to hurt somebody with a gesture or a burning word, see if you can stay with that feeling. Can you? Have you ever tried? Try to remain with a feeling, and see what happens.

미워하는 느낌이 있을 때, 제스추어로나 험악한 말로써 상대방을 깔아뭉개고 싶을 때 말이에요, 자신이 그런 느낌과 함께 그대로 머물 수 있는지를 보세요. 그럴 수 있어요? 그러려고 해 보았나요? 어떤 느낌과 함께 그대로 머물러 있어 보세요. 그리고는 어찌 되는지를 보세요.

You will find it amazingly difficult. Your mind will not leave the feeling alone; it comes rushing in with its remembrances, its associations, its do's and don'ts, its everlasting chatter.

그게 엄청나게 어렵다는 것을 알게 될 것입니다. 마음은 그 느낌을 그대로 내버려 두지를 않을 것입니다. 기억이나 연상과, 하려는 것과 안 하려는 것들, 끊임없이 재잘거리는 것들 따위로 범벅이 됩니다.

Pick up a piece of shell. Can you look at it, wonder at its delicate beauty, without saying how pretty it is, or what animal made it? Can you look without the movement of the mind? Can you live with the feeling behind the word, without the feeling that the word builds up?

조가비 하나를 집어들어 보세요. 그냥 바라 보고만 있을 수 있나요? 그 조가비의 황홀한 아름다움에 탄복한 채로, 그냥 그대로 있을 수 있습니까? 얼마나 이쁜가, 어떤 조개가 만들었을까 하는 말을 하지 말고 말입니다. 마음의 움직임이 없이 바라보기만 할 수 있어요? 말의 배면에 있는 그 느낌과 그대로 있을 수 있습니까? 말이 일으키는 느낌 없이 말이에요.

If you can, then you will discover an extraordinary thing, a movement beyond the measure of time, a spring that knows no summer.

그럴 수 있다면 그때는요, 엄청난 것을, 시간성을 넘어선 어떤 흐름을, 여름이 오지 않는 봄을 발견하게 될 것입니다.
